ACEing Cancer with the WTA, Cancer Research Racquet and ACS

Donate

The Women’s Tennis Association (WTA) is the leader in women’s sports worldwide. With the American Cancer Society, the WTA is extending its support of women through its WTA Charities ACEing Cancer Campaign to help fight cancers that impact women the most.

Building upon an initiative with Cancer Research Racquet, which has funded seven American Cancer Society "Cancer Research Rockstars" over the past eighteen years, the WTA Charities ACEing Cancer campaign will fund research specifically focused on cancers that primarily affect women and/or have high incidence and mortality rates with women, including breast, ovarian, uterine, cervical, lung, colorectal and pancreatic cancers.

Like many of us, cancer has touched the lives of the WTA family directly. Our first research grant was dedicated in memory of former WTA player, Elena Baltacha, who lost her fight to liver cancer in 2014 at the age of 30. This year, the campaign will be dedicated to the memory of WTA Legend and Hall of Famer Jana Novotna, who died from cervical cancer in 2017.

Funds from the WTA Charities ACEing Cancer campaign will support a researcher from the American Cancer Society’s “pay-if” program, which includes projects that pass the American Cancer Society’s rigorous research standards and are funded as money becomes available. There are currently over 700 active research grants that support scientists and health professionals ranging from basic lab research to bedside patient care. One of the main goals of the WTA Charities ACEing Cancer campaign is to increase the total number of researchers.

Cancer is the second leading cause of death among women, and this year 8.2 million women will be diagnosed. This initiative to fund important, women-centric research will have worldwide impact to find cures to save the lives of women like Elena Baltacha and Jana Novotna in the future. The American Cancer Society’s global program of work leverages more than 100 years of experience in the U.S. to make a difference for women around the world.

NOW is the time to fund bright minds to attack cancers that affect women. We hope you’ll help us as we work together to improve the lives of women worldwide.
